In interviewing the job applicant, there are cases wherein a representative of the partner school and organization and, in some cases, their parent/guardian are present according to the applicant's needs. The person conducting the job interview must be guided by the proper etiquette and communication concerning neurodivergent individuals as provided in the earlier module.
Aside from proper etiquette and communication, some adjustments to interview questions should be considered. Depending on the condition of the applicant, questions such as "How would you describe yourself?" are not as easy to grasp for some neurodivergent individuals. In short, keep the questions simple and straightforward.
Interviewing applicants should be objective and non-biased. Neurodivergent applicants should be allowed an opportunity to evidence their abilities and skills about the job. To supplement this, the employer may discuss with the job coach from the partner school or organization and parent/guardian to have a better picture of their personality and conditions. Any medical inquiries should be included in the interview with respect given to the protection and privacy of personal and health information.
Job descriptions should be prepared and customized for neurodivergent job seekers. The following questions may be used as a guide in developing this:
What are the duties and major responsibilities of the job?
What is the level of skill and knowledge required for the job?
What is the degree of autonomy required to perform the tasks required?
What are the physical and mental demands for the job?
What are the key relationships and how should neurodivergent individuals relate to key persons at work?
Who will supervise neurodivergent individuals as an employee?
What are the results to be achieved by the neurodivergent employee?
There are several options to promote the search for neurodivergent candidates for application. Options include:
Online posting on the internet
Newspapers
Direct communication with dedicated organizations or schools
In communicating with organizations or schools, employers should write a Letter of Invitation to them requesting nominations of job applicants among their adult neurodivergent pool and assessment of relevant skills. Additionally, this letter should be attached with the crafted job description.
